Alcohol State Officials Target Bars On New Years Eve To Curb Drunk Driving

BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) — In an effort to curtail drunk driving state investigators will be visiting bars in every major Massachusetts city New Year's Eve.

Treasurer Deborah Goldberg said the state's alcoholic beverages control commission (ABCC) will focus it's enforcement efforts on bars identified as the last to sell alcohol to a convicted drunk driver, as well as locations recognized by local police as a source of disturbances.

They are focusing enforcement efforts on bars identified as the last to sell booze to convicted drunk drivers as well as bars known to local police as chronic problem areas.

The idea behind the stepped-up enforcement is to deter bar owners from serving too much alcohol over the long-term.

The program is run along with an impaired driving crack-down by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which started the day before "Thanksgiving and runs through New Year's Eve.

In 2014 there were 10,000 drunk-driving deaths nationwide about 30-percent of all traffic deaths.
