World War 1 “Peace Cross” Unconstitutional? A three-judge panel of U.S. Court of Appeals for the fourth circuit declared last year that a Maryland World War 1 Memorial “Peace Cross” is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion. If the decision stands, the almost 100-year-old memorial will have to fall. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the appeal.
