Escaped New Hampshire Convict Captured In Virginia

CONCORD, New Hampshire (WBZ-AM) — New Hampshire State Police say a convict who escaped from a transitional work program in Concord last Wednesday made it all the way to Virginia before he was caught.

John D. Mesquita Sr., 42, escaped from NH Department of Corrections custody around noon Wednesday. He had been at the Community Corrections Transitional Work Center on North State Street in Concord, serving a sentence for armed robbery, second-degree assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, and other charges.

Authorities had information that the fleeing Mesquita had a stolen firearm and a vehicle. US Marshals, the NH Department of Corrections, and Tilton, Concord, and State Police were involved in the search for him.

NH State Police said they found out Mesquita was in Virginia, and Virginia State Police arrested him early Friday morning. He's still in Virginia pending his arraignment, and will be extradited back to the Granite State.
