DURHAM, NH (WBZ NewsRadio) — Three football payers at the University of New Hampshire are charged with assaulting people inside of a fraternity house last Saturday night. Durham police say Quinlan Dean, 21, of Greenbelt, Maryland; Kyle Hamper, 20, of Portland, Oregon; and Jackson Housman, 20, of Weare, NH invaded the Sigma Alpha Epsilon frateritySigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity between midnight and 1 a.m. on January 26th, attacking house residents.
Authorities say a patrol officer noticed “a large disturbance” between midnight and 1 a.m. and called for back up units before entering the house. A preliminary investigation revealed a party at the fraternity was disrupted after one man who had been asked to leave returned with a large group of people who forced their way into the house and started fighting with some of the fraternity brothers. O ne person was reportedly taken to the local hospital with minor injuries.
The defendants have each been charged with a felony count of riot and face a possible sentence of three and a half to seven years in prison if convicted. All three were released on personal recognizance and are expected back in Strafford County Superior Court court for arraignment on February 14th.
In a statement the University says they are viewing the charges in accordance with its procedures and "will take all appropriate steps via the conduct process to ensure the safety and well-being of our campus community.''
Police say more arrests are expected.
