MEDFORD, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) — MEDFORD, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) —The City of Medford is preparing to honor those who were forced into slavery and forgotten.
It’s an idea that came from local students.
The Salem Street Burial Ground in Medford was used to bury the town’s wealthiest - from the 17th century to the late 19th century.
It’s also where more than 50 enslaved people were buried. In the southeast corner.
Mayor Stephanie Burke says two third graders from Brooks Elementary and two seniors from Medford High - wanted them to be remembered.
In total the students raised more than $4,000 in donations and grants. The memorial’s unveiling is set for June 8.
There, the four students who started this movement will speak for those who didn’t have a voice.
