Drew Pescaro of Rutland and three others were injured when gunfire erupted inside the Kennedy Hall Building late Tuesday afternoon.

Two people were killed according to officials.

Pescaro, is a student at the school. The Niner-Times, the student-run newspaper at UNC Charlotte, publicly identified Pescaro who is a sports writer on staff as one of the people injured.

The newspaper reports that Pescaro was out of surgery and stable as of Tuesday evening.

Gunshots rang out around 5:45 p.m. on what had been the last day of classes for the spring semester at the University.

The University’s Emergency Office quickly tweeted a terrifying to their community warning of the incident: “Shots reported near Kennedy. Run, hide, fight, secure yourself immediately.”

Authorities say that a man accused for the shooting has officially been charged with murder.

Trystan Terrell,22, a former student was charged with two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder among several other charges.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper says the entire state is supporting the community at UNC Charlotte.

Phil Dubois, the University’s chancellor, called it the worst day in the history of the university and that it will take the school a long time to recover from the shooting.

“We haven’t had time to process yet how we we’ll bring our community together but whatever we do, we’ll do it together,” Dubois said. “That’s the way the Niners are. We’re going to do this but it’s going to be painful.”

While all campus activities have been canceled for Wednesday, there will be a vigil for students, alumni, faculty, staff and allies at 6 pm EDT.
