Water Main Break Floods Roads, MBTA Commuter Rail Parking Lot In Salem

SALEM, Mass ( WBZ NewsRadio) — Utility crews are working to repair a major water main break near the Salem commuter rail station.

According to officials from Salem Department of Public Works, the incident happened around 10:00 p.m. Thursday on Bridge Street.

The break flooded streets near the Salem Court House and reduced water pressure across the city, Officials said.

"There was a previous repair that actually failed," said David Knowlton, City Engineer for the City of Salem. "There was a repair clamp that we found that was broken off and that's what caused the leak," he said.

He added that the age of the repair contributed to the break.

"We have reports that it was installed back in 1959 which is well beyond it's life expectancy," he said.

City officials said that residents could experience discolored water and/or low pressure. If water is discolored, do not run hot water. Full restoration is expected late Friday morning.

"Once the water is back on, those with discolored water should run their cold tap until the water run clear," officials said.

While flooding in the area has receded, Bridge Street near the Commuter Rail Station will be closed for hours as a gas leak was also detected during the repairs.

Officials said they are hoping to reopen the road by the end of the day.

Travel on the commuter rail has not been affected. However, Keolis, the operator to the MBTA Commuter Rail, said they do not anticipate parking to be an issue Friday morning. Commuters should plan accordingly.
