The Electoral College Votes. Members of the Electoral College gathered around the country today to cast their official ballots for president. Thirty-three states and D.C. legally require their electors to choose whoever won the state’s popular vote. Seventeen states don’t “bind” their electors, meaning they can vote for whomever they choose. Congress officially counts the votes in a joint session on Jan. 6, with Vice-President Pence presiding. In past years the vote has been little more than a formality. This election, the vote marks the end to a debate on the legitimacy of the results. Is it time for the President to gracefully exit?
