NightSide with Dan Rea - Rundown for December 10, 2021

What Does Smollett Deserve? “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett has been found guilty on five counts of felony disorderly conduct for making false reports to police about being a victim of a hate crime in January 2019. His lawyer says they will appeal. Each guilty count is punishable by up to 3 years in prison and a $25,000 fine. The judge will have discretion in imposing a concurrent or consecutive sentence for each of the five counts. What should his sentence be? Given that Smollett's false accusations stirred up racial hatred, should he also be charged with a hate crime? Should he be required to pay back the city of Chicago for the resources wasted in investigating his faked assault?

Voting Rights for Noncitizens? New York City has become the largest city in the country to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections. Last night, the New York City Council approved legislation granting the right to more than 800,000 legal residents. Can a city council do this? Should people who hold citizenship in another country be allowed to vote in our elections?
