NightSide with Dan Rea - Rundown for May 18, 2022

Paving The Way For Cannabis Cafes. Today the MA House met to vote on new cannabis reform bills. One bill in particular, if passed, would pave the way for about 12 communities in the Commonwealth to allow licensed cannabis cafes as part of a 3-year pilot program. The MA Senate already passed this reform bill back in April. If the House approves the bill, it could be on Governor Baker’s desk this summer. How would you like a cannabis café in your town or neighborhood?

Waving Goodbye. A Massachusetts special commission voted unanimously to recommend a redesign of the state motto and seal that is featured on every state flag. The design currently features the hand of English militia leader Myles Standish gripping a saber over the head of a Native American. The motto roughly translates to: “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.” Critics believe the flag is “egregious” saying the militia leader is about to strike the Native American. Proponents of the flag point to the flag’s historical link to military service. Are you for or against redesigning the state flag?

Horrific Day on Wall Street. Today the U.S. stock market fell sharply with the Dow Jones Industrial Average sliding 1,200 points. The Dow is on pace for its worst day since June of 2020. Target and Walmart reported their first quarter results which showed their sales going up but their profit margins going down. Inflation fears are driving the drop. What is this doing for your bank accounts? Who is to blame?
