KINGSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — After a Kingston man suffered severe injuries in an explosion Sunday afternoon on Nobadeer Circle, state fire officials are out with a warning: leave fireworks to the professionals.

According to early findings from bomb technicians at the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, the man intended to use crafted devices in his basement as fireworks before they went off.

“The possession, use, and sale of fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts even if they’re bought legally in another state. State law requires that illegal fireworks be seized and destroyed. Don’t risk a fine and a day in court – leave fireworks to the professionals," Kingston Police Chief Maurice Splaine said.

Kingston and state officials say they recovered two "destructive devices," along with components that would be used to make more.

The man involved was reported to have sustained severe injuries to his face, hands, and abdomen in the blast. He is expected to survive after he was transported to a Boston hospital.

“In the past 10 years, fireworks have caused nearly 1,000 significant fires and explosions in Massachusetts, along with dozens of injuries and about $2.5 million in damage. Please, for your own safety and the safety of your family, friends, and neighbors, leave fireworks to the professionals," said Kingston Fire Chief Mark Douglass.
