BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The number of scams has only increased and the Boston Police Department (BPD) is warning of a new one.

According to authorities, scammers are targeting Bostonians by posing as the Parking Clerk via email messages. Recipients are falsely told they have unpaid parking ticket fees, causing some to mistakenly give out money and personal information.

“Please be advised that these messages were NOT sent by the City of Boston. The Parking Clerk does not contact individuals by email or text about unpaid parking tickets,” said BPD in a statement alerting the community.

While some people are still falling victim to text and email message scams, many have caught on to the red flags.

“Everybody is afraid now,” said Mike. “I’m very good at finding things out. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist.”

“I already know, so I already know [not to] answer it. Sometimes I put them on a block. I know how to get rid of it, but yeah, I get them all the time,” said Robinson.

Anyone who has been victimized should contact BPD.
