BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was the inaugural 'Play Ball!' for the Roxbury Community College's women's softball team.

Coached by Willie Allen, the team recently played its very first game in the Bronx against Monroe College.

The team's first two home games of the season are being played on the Boston Common.

The team is Boston's first community college softball team.

Athletic Director Albert Hayle said it was one of his missions to offer more women's sports opportunities at the college.

The athletic department's Annmarie Henriquez gave credit to the energy and commitment of the team's players helping to establish the team. "It took 50 years to pioneer this softball team to come to life," she said. "And if it wasn't for these young ladies, the freshman class... this wouldn't have happened."
