BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — An exhibition of contemporary indigenous art opens Thursday at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA).

'An Indigenous Present' is a collection of 15 contemporary Native North American artists over the past 100 years using abstraction in their works.

ICA's co-curator Jenelle Porter said this exhibition is unique because it focuses on a perspective not usually seen from these artists.

"This exhibition is important because it does something in bringing this group of artists together through a lens of abstraction that we have not seen in recent exhibitions or even past exhibitions," Porter said.

Along with the works of art in the gallery, a series of live performances and programs is being presented at the ICA starting this weekend, including what's being called 'a museum-wide takeover' featuring the sound-based installations, films, and compositions of Raven Chacon

The exhibit will be open Oct. 9 until March 8, 2026.

After Boston, 'An Indigenous Present' will be featured next year at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville and the Fry Art Museum in Seattle.
