CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The city of Cambridge is launching a new year-long study this month to help increase public shuttle use and fill in transportation gaps.

EZRide is one free shuttle service the city is focusing on after recently transforming its weekday service into a full-day, seven-day-a-week, last-mile circulator in eastern parts of Cambridge, according to a press release from the city.

Riders are already feeling the effects of having more access to the shuttle no matter what day it is.

“It comes fairly often,” Nicholas, who works in Cambridge, said. “Of course you'd like to see it come more on days like today when it gets stuck in traffic.”

The city aims for EZRide to improve access around transit routes, such as major MBTA hubs, Kendall Square, MIT and the Green Line Extension at Lechmere, according to the press release.

Other riders are hopeful these new service add-ons will make it easier to move through traffic blocks.

“I know there's been construction going on recently. I know EZRide can't control that,” Isabella, a Cambridge resident, said.

EZRide shuttles arrive every eight to 20 minutes depending on the service stop. But, she said adding on more stops to different routes could take transportation to the next level.

The initial launch of this shuttle expansion kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony back in June.

A public-private partnership between the Charles River Transportation Management Association, its 25 service-funding members and a MassDOT grant helped make this transit addition possible, according to the press release.

The city said it hopes for these changes to build on its “decades-long commitment to sustainable and equitable urban mobility.”
