ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —Capron Park Zoo is holding a naming contest for its baby sloth.

According to a post on the zoo’s social media accounts, interested participants can submit names into a box at the gift shop.

The baby sloth was born this past October and, according to Zoo Director John Wright, was the first animal in some time to be born at the zoo, leading to the contest idea.

“As we bring animals in, they sometimes come in with their names,” Wright said. “This is the first animal that’s been born here in awhile and that’s why it is the perfect opportunity to do this.”

The contest started on Friday, May 23, and Wright said they will be accepting them until June 6. The winner of the contest will have their chosen name used and will receive, “a special behind-the-scenes tour of sloth care, a sloth-themed gift basket, and recognition on our (the zoo's) website and social media channels,” as detailed on the zoo’s social media.

“The people with the winning suggested name will actually get to do a behind-the-scenes tour and get to meet the staff that care for it,” Wright further explained.

The baby sloth has made her presence known. Zookeeper Kayla St. George said she is feisty.

“She was trying to steal mom’s food, solid food, after one week of just being born,” she said.

St. George also mentioned the baby’s mother Narissa has taken wonderful care of her.

“She is a proven mom, she takes excellent care of her babies.”
