BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Eversource held an information session at Action for Boston Community Development in Dorchester to help customers save energy and stay cool in the summer months.

This comes after a winter of high bill costs due to massive increases in gas prices and delivery.

Energy usage tends to increase by 30% in the summer months as households use their air conditioners more, spiking their energy bill once again.

In hopes of combating higher bills, Director of Residential Energy Efficiency at Eversource Kate Peters gave numerous tips on how best to keep your house cool while using the least amount of energy possible.

“When the hot summer sun is shining right into your house, it warms up the rooms and if you keep the blinds closed during those periods of the day it can actually make a difference in how cool your home feels,” Peters said. “This one’s kind of interesting, setting your ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise.”

ABCD President Sharon Scott-Chandler talked about how important these energy saving tips and projects are, especially for safety reasons.

“Summer has become almost as dire in Massachusetts because the heat can really be unsafe for seniors in particular and families with children,” Scott-Chandler. “People are realizing the effects that summers and other times of the are getting hotter and they need to do this.”

Along with this advice, the energy company has promised to help pay potentially up to 100% of the bill costs for projects to help modernize homes to better keep cool air in.

Scott-Chandler mentioned covering the costs allows everyone, even those with a lower income, to be able to brave the summer months without breaking the bank.

“Our program exists to help people who can’t afford to do what other folks can afford to do,” she said.
