QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some fans are rallying behind the Red Sox, while others are not getting their hopes up.
The Red Sox clinched a playoff berth on Friday for the first time since 2021. Sunday marks the last day of the regular season, with the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays still vying for first place in the American League East. Whoever finishes second will have a best-of-three series with the Sox in the Wild Card Round.
A recent poll in The Athletic shows over 80 percent of Red Sox fans are pessimistic about the team's chances to win the World Series. However, many of the fans WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas spoke to on Sunday morning are staying optimistic for a deep run.
"Honestly, I feel they have a really good chance. They've made it this far. They've eked their way in. This is not the first time the Sox have done that. I really think they're going to pull it off," one fan said.
"Look at what the team has done so far. Don't look at what they did at the beginning of the season," another fan stated. "Look at what they've done when it's come down to it."
"Yeah, I think they can make it at least a couple rounds, for sure," one resident remarked.
"I think this is a good team this year, so I'm excited that they finally made it," another fan stated.
"If they clinched the World Series, then we will have a big party in Boston," one local said.
"The outcome is extremely optimistic. I mean, I would think they have every success in the world if they work together," another resident proclaimed.
Regardless of who the Sox play in the first round, there will be no games at Fenway. The Red Sox will need to advance to the next round for October baseball in Boston.
