FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Foxborough High School officials started the process to replace a controversial school logo of a Native American that the school has used for decades.

Foxborough High School Principal James Donovan proposed a plan to school committee members this week that will start the process to replace the school’s current logo. Donovan plans for replacement options to be presented to school officials at the end of April.

A panel of students and adults will be created next month to create ideas for a replacement logo, and they will present their concepts to school officials later this spring.

WBZ NewsRadio’s Chris Fama spoke with people in Foxborough with opinions on both sides of the issue.

One person said that getting rid of the logo “makes sense because I think it’s a little offensive.”

“I think it’s a lot of wasted time,” another person told Fama.

Another person agreed. “I don’t see nothing wrong with it at all.”

However, even if the logo is changed, the mascot name “The Warriors” will remain the same. This will help ease the transition and “address the emotions behind [the old logo],” one person said. “How people identify with [the logo] is important,” she added.

Another person thought that keeping the mascot name the same is a good thing. “That’s been the name of this team since we’ve had Foxborough schools, and I think that [keeping the Warriors name] is very helpful.”

The Warriors football team is an important fixture to many people in Foxborough. “They’ve done a great program for a lot of years,” said one man.

One person mostly supported the decision to change the logo, with some caveats. “As long as [the logo] is something that’s representative. I’ve seen some towns do this, and what they came up with was ‘eh,’” he added.

In June, the school board will give a final recommendation about the changes to the mascot image.
