CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Over 600 Harvard faculty members have signed a letter this week, urging the university to stand up to what they call “attacks on American universities.”

Last week, Columbia University gave in to demands from the Trump Administration to avoid losing $400 million in federal funding. The Administration threatened to cancel that funding if the school did not change how it handled protests and antisemitism on campus.

The letter from Harvard faculty, obtained by the Boston Globe, said the federal government’s actions “threaten the bedrock principles of a democratic society, including rights of free expression, association, and inquiry.”

In February, the Justice Department announced it would be “visiting 10 university campuses that have experienced antisemitic incidents since October 2023.” Harvard University and Columbia University were both on that list. Numerous pro-Palestinian protests have been held on college campuses since the war in Gaza began.

Earlier this month, the Trump Administration launched investigations into dozens of colleges across the country for alleged Title VI violations, including multiple schools in New England.
