BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has given a statement on President Joe Biden's campaign for reelection, urging him to consider if he is the best candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump.

Healey released the statement on Friday, praising Biden for his "outstanding job" in the White House for the last four years.

She said that she is grateful for his leadership, but she also urged him to "listen to the American people and carefully evaluate whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump."

Here is the full statement from Healey:

"President Biden saved our democracy in 2020 and has done an outstanding job over the last four years. I am deeply grateful for his leadership. And I know he agrees this is the most important election of our lifetimes. The best way forward right now is a decision for the President to make. Over the coming days, I urge him to listen to the American people and carefully evaluate whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump. Whatever President Biden decides, I am committed to doing everything in my power to defeat Donald Trump.”

Healey's statement came after she met with Biden along with other Democratic governors this week.

The Biden campaign has been trying to make up ground after a less-than-ideal debate performance on June 27.

Some Democratic lawmakers are pushing Biden to step aside after his shaky performance did little to comfort voters' concerns about the president's age and fitness.

So far, Biden has vowed to stay in the presidential race, most recently asserting his intention to beat Trump during a campaign event in Wisconsin on Friday.
