HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Officials are trading their annual tradition of fireworks for a drone show in Hingham for the Fourth of July festivities.
"Ultimately environmentally, I mean while we love fireworks, but the amount of pollution that they create — the smoke, the noise, you know, it's something different," said Marco Boer, chair of the Hingham Harbor Development Committee. "So, life is full of traditions, but traditions change. And so, we are starting a new tradition and I think it's going to be great."
The decision comes as law makers move to protect the Oystercatchers in the area. The presence of the large, thickset bird legally bars the town from executing their annual show.
"They found a home here during COVID on one of our islands and they haven't left. And so, we are precluded under federal law from disturbing them. So, we can no longer do fireworks," remarked Boer.
The revamped show will feature 300 synchronized drones showcasing the town's history. Orchestrated by Hire UAV Pro and led by the Town of Hingham Harbor Development Committee with the Hingham Historical Society and Lions Club, the celebration starts at 6 pm on the Hingham Bathing Beach.
"You really have to be right at the bathing beach to get the best sight lines," said Boer. "You're going to see some very iconic buildings in Hingham. You'll see some iconic sculptures and things like that so, it really tells about the history of Hingham.
Town officials are joining the growing trend of drone shows to minimize the release of toxic chemicals and the disruption of faunas in the area.
"We're not trying to take anything away from anyone. We're trying to make this more inclusive and environmentally sustainable tradition that can carry on for many many years to come," said Hillary Goodknow of Hingham's Harbor Development Committee. "It's really about reducing noise and air pollution and protecting local wildlife — particularly the Oystercatcher birds."
