NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The final holiday travel period of the year is turning out to be another busy one.

A whole lot of rubber is expected to meet the road over the next two weeks, with things starting to ramp up on Monday. AAA says over 109 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles by car for an end-of-the-year trip — a 2% increase compared to last year.

Luke from Worcester has advice for those hitting the highways.

"I go to Penn State, so I drove up for the holidays from there, and the travel was a little crazy," Luke said. "It's always nice to have someone with you, so good company makes the ride a little easier."

The weather may not be so frightful at the moment, but holiday travel could depend on where you go and when you leave. According to the National Weather Service, Massachusetts is expected to see snow a few days before Christmas. Those traveling are encouraged to leave as early as possible. Peak travel times are in the afternoon and early evening hours between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Some residents say they want to avoid driving as much as possible.

"I can't wait to get back home before the nuts get out on the road," one local said.

The holiday travel period runs through Thursday, Jan. 1.
