BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A hair salon in the South End is offering a haircutting experience for kids that hopes to dial down the potential stress that usually comes with kids shedding locks.
Mayne Kids Hair Studio is a child-only hair salon founded by Danni Pi after she was having trouble finding a satisfactory way to cut her own boys’ hair.
Pi explained that bringing them to her own hair salon or cutting their hair in the bathtub wasn’t as comfortable experience for them as she wanted, so she opened a place where the cuts would be geared toward them and other children.
The salon itself is a light, airy converted retail space in the South End. It's outfitted with pastel colors, chairs made specifically for young children, and a play area, among other things. Pi said she hired two stylists (the similarly named Kayla and Mikayla) who showed a specific desire and altitude for working with young kids, where other stylists might only tolerate them.

She said short of going to the doctor, hair can be the most in-your-face a stranger will get with kids early on, so it's important to nail that interaction.
“Hair is the only other thing I would argue that someone is getting so close and personal to you, this is yours, it's on your body,” Pi said. “From an experience perspective, there has to be something better.”
While Pi conceded that there were other child-focused haircutting places out, she said they generally don't hit the right vibe that kids need, especially for a first cut.
"It’s about volume and just getting as many haircuts through the door,” she said. On the contrary, she says Mayne is all about personalized experience.
“It's more than just a haircut, it’s not about the haircut, the haircut is just the thing that happens, but it’s everything else that’s happening.”
Danni says that the salon has been a great success, and the high demand has her eyeing a potential expansion.
