BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Stardom filled the halls at Boston Latin School (BLS) as around 800 students watched one of their former pupils speak.
Award-winning actress Ayo Edebiri was joined by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu as she visited her former school grounds on Thursday. The two took the stage at BLS to talk about Edebiri’s time at BLS and how it affected her acting career.
“It’s such a specific experience going to this school, the seniors are sort of nodding their heads,” Edebiri said. “There's… a level of care that I think that I have, that would not be possible without having gone to this school.”
Edebiri has appeared in shows and films such as The Bear, Inside Out 2, and Abbott Elementary. She said she is proud to come from the oldest public school in America and gave some encouragement to current students.
“You’re going to better the world, big or small, just by being yourself, trying to share the things that you’ve learned, the good that’s been put into you. Just try to do that for other people,” Edebiri told the students.
Mayor Wu also had some questions and kind words for the actress, followed by a statement regarding funding for Boston schools.
“It meant a lot to have Ayo to her home school community to share a little bit about her journey,” Wu said. “We know that, at a really difficult time public education is in many ways on the chopping block at a federal level, and so much of what we do here in Boston is targeted for funding cuts.”
Mayor Wu also announced that April 10, 2025, will be ‘Ayo Edebiri Day’ in the City of Boston.
