METHUEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Authorities in Methuen have shut down a spa in the city, as the manager is accused of human trafficking.
According to Methuen Police, the Beauty Garden Spa on Wallace Street was raided on Sept. 4. The spa was immediately closed by the Methuen Department of Health, Human Services, and Inspections after two women were allegedly found in the basement.
The spa’s manager, 38-year-old Suping Zhu of Flushing, N.Y., was arrested on Friday. Zhu was charged with trafficking a person for sexual servitude, deriving support from prostitution, and keeping a house of ill fame.
In a statement, Methuen Mayor D.J. Beauregard and Police Chief Scott McNamara said the arrest is just the start of an “aggressive campaign to eradicate human trafficking and sexual servitude in Methuen.”
“From a policy standpoint, I am declaring war on human trafficking in the City of Methuen. We will identify and apprehend traffickers, shut down every business in Methuen that profits from this evil, and hold landlords accountable if they harbor them — we will find you, and we are coming after you next,” said Beauregard in the statement.
Zhu appeared in Lawrence District Court on Monday, where she was ordered to surrender her passport. Bail was set at $25,000. Zhu's next court date is scheduled for Oct. 24.
