LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some residents in Lowell said they are upset after several newly planted trees at South Common Park were damaged and vandalized.

Branches of the young trees were ripped off, the trunk snapped in half, and some were even toppled over.

“At first I thought it looked like a storm knocked it over,” one Lowell resident told WBZ NewsRadio while out walking his dog. “When I further investigated, I noticed it was intentionally knocked down by somebody, and it was quite a few knocked down.”

The trees were planted by the South Common Arboretum. Each tree had a tag that described the different species of trees as part of a larger educational program.

“They’ve done a lot of work on this area, on this green,” another local resident Stephanie said. “That’s really sad. I don’t understand why people do things like that.”
