PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — When the editors of Readers Digest went looking for the Massachusetts entry for their "Top 50 Nicest Places To Live" list, they picked the same spot the Pilgrims did nearly 400 years ago.

"What better place to sort of revive that American ideal of Thanksgiving—of welcoming strangers, of helping them with whatever you need?" Readers Digest Senior Editor Jeremy Greenfield told WBZ NewsRadio's Jim McKay.

The magazine says Plymouth isn't the usual neighborhood, "but it is one that has witnessed America at its core every day since the Pilgrims landed in 1620."

The annual contest, where readers can vote online for the nicest place to live, isn't about property value or a good view on the water.

It's about the community as a whole, and great stories of kindness—one from each state.

"They're all a little different, and they all tell different kinds of stories of kindness, so that all of our readers can find something to relate to," Greenfield said.

You can vote online here, and a winner will be chosen this fall.
