PEMBROKE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Not that extra motivation is ever needed to get in the mood for an ice cream.

But a takeout shop on the South Shore is literally giving ice cream away during the spring and summer seasons.

Dairy Twist in Pembroke picks four names out of a generator three to four times a week, and those names get posted to receive their free cones.

The owner of Dairy Twist, Jonathan Hopfgarten, explained the rules. "Two girls two boys, or two men two women," he said. "We put those names up and those people get to have free ice cream for the day."

No nicknames allowed.

Legal first names have to be submitted. "Right off the bat, people would come with their IDs out before we even ask for it."

Hopfgarten said his shop also offers free ice cream for first responders and plans to do the same for other professions. "It's a fun thing to do, it gets people excited," Hopfgarten said.

As for the young kids, Hopfgarten said it's pretty much the honor system. "The little kids come in and they don't have IDs, so we've had parents bring things like school folders with their names on them which is pretty funny and cool."
