BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — As deadline day creeps closer, lots of people still have to crunch the numbers.

Tuesday, April 15, is the last day for citizens to file their income tax returns for the fiscal year 2024. According to data from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the total number of returns received by March 28 was down by roughly one percent compared to the same time in 2024.

WBZ NewsRadio's Chris Fama asked people where they were in the process. Even though time is starting to run out, not everyone is concerned.

“I don’t really think about it, man. Nah,” said one man.

“I’m still holding off, I guess. It’s procrastination. I just haven’t sat down to do it yet. I mean…it’s never on the last day possible, but once you get reminded once or twice, I’ll take care of it,” said another man.

Those who miss the deadline will have to pay a 5 percent penalty on top of what they would have owed, which can grow to a maximum of 25 percent depending on the lateness of the filing. Some people said they learned their lesson after missing the deadline in the past.

“The next thing you know, it’s April 14 and you’re like ‘uh oh.’ Don’t mess with the IRS. I did my taxes first week of February,” said another man.

“I feel like even supervillains don’t have the power to mess with the IRS, so you better file them,” said another man.
