Proposed Ballot Question May Change How Gig Workers Are Classified And Paid

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – There are two publicity campaigns on either side of one issue: a proposed 2022 ballot question that would say how gig workers are classified and paid.

Lyft, Uber, Door Dash and Instacart are all part of the Massachusetts Coalition for Independent Work, an organization that wants to maintain flexibility for drivers who work for these companies.

At the same time, they want workers to maintain an 18 dollar minimum wage while paying for health insurance in part through Massachusetts Health Connector.

Marcus Cole is one of the drivers in favor of the plan.

“I’ll be able to make the benefits,” he says. “I already make a healthy wage but the benefits is what I need.”

A few hours later, the Coalition to Protect Workers' Rights held its own news conference with the AFL-CIO’s Steven Tolman saying these companies should have to act like every other company.

“They should follow the same laws that every other business in Massachusetts follows,” Tolman commented. He also said these businesses should pay social security.
