BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The countdown to Mother's Day is on which can prompt some difficult discussions for children in Boston.

For example, "Am I the only one that got mom a present?" asked one local resident.

According to the National Retail Federation, 84% of Americans are planning on honoring a special woman in their life on Sunday.

Mother's Day spending is expected to reach $34.1 billion this year, up from $33.5 billion in 2024.

57% of the shopping is specifically for a mother or stepmother, with 23% for a wife and 12% for a daughter.

The most popular gifts include flowers, greeting cards, and special outings.

"We got an Airbnb, then we're going to have a big spread. So it'll be like a weekend-long deal. It'll be a good time," said one Bostonian.

"We are going to the Grand Canyon. Hoping to experience just the beautiful grand jour, for lack of better words," said another.

Consumers are expected to spend $6.8 billion on jewelry, $6.3 billion on special outings, $3.5 billion on gift cards, $3.2 billion on flowers, and $1.1 billion on greeting cards.

While some have plans that include wining and dining, others, like Liam from Revere have something planned that doesn't cost anything:

"I'm gonna give my wife some free time. Take the kids to go out and have fun."

But no matter the gift, it's usually the thought that counts.
