BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — New research suggests that contrary to popular belief, women who drink two-and-half cups of coffee a day, while also embracing physical activity and a healthy diet, enjoy a long healthy life.

"I'm telling everyone I know because everyone gives me crap for drinking coffee every day, so I'm telling everybody," said one local coffee enthusiast.

The study, which followed more than 47,000 women over a 30-year period, found that drinking coffee regularly contributed to healthier aging void of chronic diseases, cognitive decline, and physical impairments. While some women might not reveal their coffee intake, others have no problem admitting they already incorporate this tip into their daily routine.

"Two to three. Yeah, I'm good. I'll live," remarked one Bostonian.

Healthy aging is defined as being free of 11 major chronic diseases, having good mental health capacities, no memory complaints or cognitive impairments, and maintaining overall physical function after the age of 70.

Unfortunately, the benefits don't extend to other caffeinated beverages such as tea or decaf. But coffee lovers beware. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that adults limit their caffeine intake to 400 milligrams per day, equivalent to approximately four 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee. Too much coffee can contribute to anxiety and insomnia.
