SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new pilot program in Massachusetts is offering tailored food boxes for people with chronic health conditions.
The Greater Boston Food Bank has teamed up with local partners to help people dealing with health issues meet their daily nutritional requirements.
One of the local food partners is the Salem Food Pantry.
Kia Fernandes is the Pantry's Marketing Coordinator.
She said one of the keys to good health is a good diet. "We know that food is medicine," she said. "There is so much power in a healthy diet, so this does nothing but help the community."
The new program delivers custom tailored food boxes for a range of medical issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and high risk pregnancies. "It takes away a little bit of the burden of your grocery bill along with helping with your medical needs," Fernades said.
While the program is just getting established in Salem, Fernandes said it is already providing a service to an often overlooked population.
