BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some Gen Z women decide the tradition of taking their partner's last name when married is not for them.

Some users on social media, like TikTok, cite a few different reasons for not wanting to take their partner's name. Some said they think the paperwork required is too much of a hassle, some want to be seen more as an individual regardless of marital status and they think it's better for their career to keep their last name. Others said it depends on their partner's last name and if they like it more than their own.

Some Boston men like Adrian and Alex said they don't mind women not wanting to change their name. "I guess as a guy I don't care, it is what it is, but it is tradition and I guess it's all I know. But it's just a name," Adrian said.

"I think it's fine, I don't see an issue with it. I think it's up to people what they want to do with their relationships and it's not really my place to judge what other people do with their relationships," Alex said. He said he hasn't really thought about it before.

Some Gen Z men like Adrian said they would even take their partner's name. "I'm iffy about my last name so if my partner happens to have a cooler last name then I'd probably take the cooler last name," Adrian said.

Some Gen Z women in Boston said they would combine or hyphenate their last name with their partner's. "Hyphenations are good," one said. "I would say I'm pro-hyphen," said another.
