SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Posto on Assembly Row has quickly become the talk of the town.
Juan Gabriel Perez is feeling the benefits after being named one of the hundred best pizza chefs in the entire world by ‘Best Pizza Awards’. But the feeling isn’t entirely unfamiliar for the skilled chef.
“This is my third year actually being nominated,” Perez said. “[I like] how pizza can get people together, and to me it's just something I really love, like the art of making this.”
Perez placed No. 54 in this year's ranking, making it his best placing yet. It all started in 2010, when Perez was working as a dishwasher at a California Pizza Kitchen. He then opened Posto, where much of what he learned carried over.
“And I was like, just seeing how the guys were making pizza, and I got really into it,” said Perez. “We bring flour from Italy, we make our own mozzarella here.”
Perez also traveled to the Best Pizza Awards Gala in Milan for the first time, where he was happy to receive the prestigious award.
“It’s just crazy to see how making pizza can take you all over the world,” Perez said. “I think just the fact that you do something and you feel it’s art, because to me, pizza is art.”
