BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some college-bound students got quite the surprise to help lower their costs of tuition.

On Wednesday, six Boston Public School (BPS) seniors sat on the edge of their seats as they waited to find out which one of them was taking home the $10,000 Green Garner Scholarship. The event took place at the BPS headquarters in Roxbury.

“I know that they’re like me, they’re hoping they get the money. Whoever gets the money, good luck to them,” said Julie Cyprien before the event.

Once the winner was announced, which turned out to be Cyprien, the students thought it was over. Then, they found out they were all getting the $10,000 scholarship, thanks to an anonymous donation of $50,000.

Mari Baker from the Boston Latin School was crying tears of joy, knowing that the burden of high tuition costs will be a little easier for her and her family.

“[I’m] so shocked,” said Baker. “Very unexpected, but I’m so excited and grateful.”

Some of the students were first generation immigrants and others will be the first to go to college in their families. Cyprien was very happy to see the others also get the scholarship.

“We all worked hard for it, you know? It was an amazing, amazing thing,” said Cyprien.
