BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — House of Seven Café in Dorchester is just a kiosk outside of the Shawmut MBTA station, but it provides commuters and local workers with a welcome break from their busy days.

Tamicka Brown is the owner of House of Seven Café. “I am a Boston native. I was raised here,” and then she moved to Denver when she was eight years old.

Now she is back in the area and providing MBTA riders and locals with a caffeine hit at her coffee kiosk.

House of Seven used to be a mobile café, and Brown was excited to expand to its current location in Dorchester. The location provides built-in customers, with commuters heading to the Shawmut MBTA station and teachers at a nearby school coming over for lunch breaks.

But the location wasn't always a given, explained Brown, since it was set to be demolished not so long ago. “Prior to [the café], it was used for COVID. They were passing out some food bags and so forth to the community.”

The land is owned by the Epiphany School, an independent school near the station, and they are letting Brown use it for her café.

The school also benefits from Brown’s kiosk. Now, teachers stop by the café for a lunch break “instead of ordering UberEats," explained Brown.

House of Seven is also a popular stop for MBTA commuters. “With the wait times” for the trains, said Brown, “it’s nice to have a stop to make and actually have a cup of coffee.”

A popular offering isn't coffee, but a house-made blend of mushroom tea, which Brown said does not give you the typical jitters you might get from other caffeinated beverages like coffee.
