LOWELL (WBZ-AM) — A man has been arrested in the fatal stabbing of a teenager near the UMass Lowell campus last night.
Victor Crespo, 21 of Lowell, is charged with second-degree murder, as well as two counts of violation of a restraining order.
The Middlesex District Attorney's Office said Crespo stabbed 18-year-old Asiatic Alvarez of Lowell around 7 p.m. Monday. Alvarez was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The stabbing happened on part of the Riverwalk along the Merrimack River, near the Ouellette Bridge and across the street from LeLacheur Park.
Alvarez was not a student at UMass—but the school sent all students an email warning them to be careful in the area.
The Middlesex DA's Office said police identified Crespo Monday night, and took him into custody Tuesday morning without incident.
Investigators believe the two knew each other, and had arranged to meet to conduct a marijuana deal. They allege Crespo stabbed Alvarez several times before running away.
One student told WBZ NewsRadio's Doug Cope that she will be cautious when walking around the area, but feels it is safe.
"I mean, every location has a bad thing, so, if I'm scared about everything that happens in the world, I'll probably be very scared," she said. "I trust the Lowell Police and the school police, I'm not concerned, no."
