BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Port Authority has proposed a new plan to combat the thousands of Uber and Lyft rides that cause congestion at Logan Airport terminals and the surrounding roadways. The plan calls for a new pickup and dropoff location, in addition to fee hikes for users.
While still sorting out specifics, the proposed pickup and drop off spot will be moved to the ground floor of the Central Garage. Currently, passengers can be dropped off at their terminal, but have to walk to a designated outdoor pickup spot.
"By moving these operations into the garage, it will be easier for a [rideshare] driver dropping off a passenger to match with a waiting pick up passenger," Massport said in a release. "Passengers will have a shorter wait time to be picked up, in a weather-protected area (unlike the current set up), and will have the option to take a Massport-discounted shared ride, such as uberPOOL and Lyft Line. TNC drivers will wait less time between customers, and experience less congestion on our roadways."
In addition to the proposed pickup and drop-off locations, Massport wants to hike fees for rideshare trips to and from the airport from $3.25 to $5. However, to decrease traffic congestion the plan calls for a discounted fee of $2.50 for those who carpool.
