BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A stretch of Commonwealth Avenue is closed this morning due to a water main break that happened just before 10 p.m. Monday night.
The inbound side of the busy Boston artery is shutdown between Exeter Street and Dartmouth Street as municipal and emergency crews manage the situation. The 16-inch pipe that broke dates back to the 1870s, Boston Water & Sewer tells WBZ NewsRadio, describing the repair to be a "delicate situation" due to a nearby gas line.
Six buildings have been evacuated and water service is not available on the inbound side of Commonwealth Avenue. There is no timetable for cleanup to be completed.
Boston Police said Comm Ave was closed from Dartmouth Street to Exeter Street, reopened at Fairfield Street. Drivers are being diverted to Beacon Street, and Comm Ave inbound is open from Mass Ave to the Public Gardens.
