Former Boston Celtics Player Paul Silas Dies At 79

BOSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Three-time NBA champion and former NBA head coach Paul Silas has passed away at age 79, according to Houston Rockets.

Paul Silas won two championships with the Boston Celtics when he played with the team from 1972 to 1976. He was also LeBron James' first coach in the NBA.

"Our heartfelt thoughts are with Stephen and his family during this difficult time," The Houston Rockets wrote on Twitter.

Silas played for 16 NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, the St. Louis Hawks, the Phoenix Suns, the Atlanta Hawks, the Denver Nuggets, and the Seattle SuperSonics. His son, Stephen Silas, is the current Rockets' head coach.

After he retired from playing in 1980, he began coaching for the San Diego Clippers. He went on to coach for the Charlotte Hornets, the New Orleans Hornets, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Charlotte Bobcats.
