MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School students in Marlborough got to put their welding skills to the test when they created a sculpture for one local company.

Diane and Kenny Cyphers, the owners of Empire Pest Control, reached out to the school's Metal Fabrication and Welding program to see if some students could replace their rotting wooden bug sculpture with a brand new sculpture.

The students were able to get real-life experience while working on the project. Cyphers visited Assabet to discuss his ideas and what he wanted to see in the sculpture with the students in November. They then worked to design and create a sculpture based on Cyphers' requests.

"The opportunity for Assabet students to work on these community projects contributes greatly to their real-world experience and demonstrates how their skills can be applied to a future career," said Superintendent Houle. "Not only do they continue to develop their practical and professional skills, but they also build their confidence in their ability to do amazing work."
