NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A New Bedford man and his eight-year-old son are now being identified after they were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide on Friday. Bristol County District Attorney said the deceased boy was related to a New Bedford woman who has been missing since 2019.

On Friday at around 8:09 a.m., New Bedford Police arrived at 1643 Phillips Road after receiving a request for a well-being check for George Scott III and 8-year-old Dante Hazard. It was there that officers discovered their bodies, said Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

Police said a relative who had not been able to get in contact with Scott requested the well-being check, officials said.

"Mr. Scott appears to have killed the boy with a sharp object before taking his own life," said DA Thomas M. Quinn III's office.

Detectives were seen at Scott's house about two-and-a-half weeks ago conducting a court-issued search warrant as part of the missing person investigation of Lisa Hazard, Dante's mother. Scott is a person of interest in Hazard's disappearance.

Hazard has been missing since March 5, 2019, said Fall River Police Department.

Bristol County District Attorney's Office said they are waiting on the medical examiner for confirmation.

An investigation is ongoing at this time.
