SPENCER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Just the shell of a 19th-century church remains as firefighters in Spencer continue to work to put out the church engulfed in flames on Friday afternoon.

Spencer Fire Department and several other local fire departments battled a six-alarm fire that broke out at the First Congregational United Church on Main Street.

"Almost 100 firefighters from about 18 departments responded to the scene. Fire officials expect to be here all night," the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said.

Video footage of the scene showed the steeple and internal of the building collapsed. The Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District said the church was struck by lightning earlier on Friday during the storm.
