BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - Have you ever checked out at CVS and ended up leaving with a 3-foot long receipt? We all have. In fact the length of receipts from CVS have become somewhat of a joke in recent years.

The absurd length of CVS's receipts even have their own active reddit community, where people like you can compare receipt lengths and laugh about what to do with all that excess paper. They've even a fashion statement, with the "receipt scarf" popping up on sites like Etsy and Amazon.

So is the CVS receipt really that long?

We sent WBZ's Chris Fama to find out how the lengths of other store receipts compare to the typical mile-long CVS receipt. He visited four stores, buying four items each.

The BJ's receipt was 16.5 inches, he left Shaw's with a 14 inch receipt, Walmart handed him 7 inches of paper and at CVS? He walked away with more than 31 inches of receipt.

So what is exactly on the receipt? It all comes down to the CVS ExtraCare program. All that excess paper is full of coupons, tailor made to the specific customer based on past purchases or other factors. For example, if pollen count is high in your area, CVS may throw you a coupon for allergy products.

There is good news. You don't have to opt for paper receipts anymore, as CVS has rolled out a digital version.
