DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Health officials are asking anyone who may have had direct contact with a woodchuck at a popular ice cream shop in Dartmouth this weekend, to get checked out.

Authorities say the animal made an appearance at John George Ice Cream in Dartmouth around 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2023.

Woodchucks are known to carry diseases like rabies. It can be easily spread through salvia, either through a bite or scratch, or if saliva somehow gets into a fresh wound, nose, eyes or mouth.

Please contact the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) at 617-983-6800 (available 24 hours/7 days a week) or your health care provider for a rabies exposure risk assessment as soon as possible.
