HANSON, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Lucy is hanging up her leash after just one year on the job as a Community Resource Dog in Hanson. The golden retriever who's become a staple around town has been diagnosed with a medical condition impacting her kidneys and is no longer able to perform her duties.

"The issue was discovered during her routine medical care. The condition makes her susceptible to dehydration, fatigue, and discomfort." Hanson Police wrote in a statement. "We would like to thank the staff at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medical and our very own VCA Hanson Animal Hospital for their wonderful and continued care."

A non-profit is currently being created to help offset medical costs and to further fund future working dogs in the community.

Next, Lucy will head home with Officer Harrington and his family, where hopefully she'll enjoy a long retirement.

As for Hanson's next Community Resource Dog? Hanson Police said an announcement is coming.
