SALEM, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - After a fishing vessel experienced some sort of net mishap this week, thousands of dead fish floated into Salem Harbor on Wednesday.

Most of the fish ended up between Palmer Cove Yacht Club and the sea wall behind Pioneer Terrace and Palmer Cove Park.

"A fishing vessel engaged in purse seining for bait fish experienced a failure of its net on Monday. This resulted in a loss of the catch back into the harbor. Accordingly, there is a large quantity of expired fish floating in the waterway. This is not a result of an ocean water quality issue. The Department of Marine Fisheries has been notified of the incident." Salem Harbormaster Captain Bill McHugh said in a statement.

City Councilor Jeff Cohen, who represents ward 5, said officials were going to monitor the situation, but ultimately let nature take it's course.
