FALMOUTH, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Falmouth Police are out with a warning after reports of potential drink spiking at a local establishment.

Authorities did not disclose the name of the venue, but said the establishment was not responsible for the alleged incident.

The problem isn't just in Falmouth, in fact drink spiking is on the rise across Massachusetts and the U.S. Earlier this year, local lawmakers prioritized the problem, with the Massachusetts Senate voting to approve funding for drug testing kits to be handed out to local bars, restaurants and nightlife venues.

There are a number of steps you can take to prevent falling victim to drink spiking.

Know that most of these incidents involve so-called "date rape drugs" and can come in both powder and liquid form. These drugs typically do not have an unusual smell or taste and are not noticeable when mixed into someone's drink.

Never leave your drink unattended and only accept drinks from someone you trust or a server. Avoid drinking from large punch bowls or jugs of cocktails and instead opt for bottled drinks.

Authorities said if you believe your drink has been tampered with, don't continue to drink it. Tell someone you trust like a friend or family member.

If you start to feel strange or more intoxicated than you believe you should be, tell someone you trust. If you're out alone, call 911 immediately and inform first responders that you believe your drink's been spiked.
